Tannenbaum Madness

Tannenbaum Madness is an event, inviting families and art lovers to bundle up and take a stroll up Alberta Street this holiday season. Over thirty businesses up and down NE Alberta Street create a walking tour of whimsical, artistic, and unique holiday trees on display it in their front windows.

Growing Culinary Herbs

My Territorial Seed Catalog arrived in the mail last week and I find myself easily distracted with thoughts of my summer garden... What to plant? When to plant? I'll be starting some seeds indoor again this year, and I'm going to try growing some herbs in one of the new Herb Pot Trios ($48) that RED SAIL is now carrying. My go-to cooking herbs are basil, thyme and parsley so I'll probably start with those.
Sagaform's Herb Pots are great for growing herbs (or flowers) on a sunny counter top, and for keeping cut herbs fresh and close at hand during dinner prep. As you can see below, it's pretty simple. The ceramic pot hides the plastic planting pot if your growing plants, or corrals the stems of your cut herbs, keeping the ends in the water bath you pour into the base. The top and bottom halves are separate, so any clean up is super easy.

New cork and bamboo pieces from Bambu

Boxes, boxes, everywhere! For the last two weeks I've been buried in deliveries, which means lots of new items to choose from! This week I've posted more than thirty new pieces, and more are on the way in the coming three months.

RED SAIL is now carrying items from Bambu, a company started by an Oregonian, who now lives and works in China. I love to buy local, but China is where it's at for certified organic bamboo and cork. Bambu adheres to fair trade practices, provides education assistance to its employees and supports microfinace through their association with the Grameen Foundation. All of the packaging they use is 100% recycled fiber or recyclable, and they donate 1% of their net sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment through the non-profit 1% For the Planet (which RED SAIL is also a member of). Now available are Bambu's new line of cork serving bowls and appetizers trays. These naturally beautiful pieces are made from 100% renewable and biodegradable cork, which can be harvested continually from the outer bark without harming the tree. Some of the many benefits of cork are:
*Impermeable to liquid (Amazing - I saw it at the trade show, very cool.)
*Naturally hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial and anti-fungal
*Slip-resistant and lightweight
*FDA food-safe
*Cushions and absorbs sound (so so clanking in the kicthen, and if you use the trays or small bowl as a catch-all by the door, no noise when you throw down the keys and loose change!)

It's 106 in Portland today, and since it's way too hot to go outside I've been toiling away in the kitchen perfecting my favorite cold beverage recipes. This is what I've been drinking nonstop this week!

Seriously Refreshing Lemonade

Combine 2 cups of sugar and 2 1/2 cups of sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved, then let simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool about 20 minutes. In the mean time, head outside and pick about 3/4 cup of loosely packed fresh mint leaves, and a 1/4 cup of basil (or pick those up at the market before hand if you're not blessed with a green thumb). Rinse and either chop or tear those leaves up and put in a large non-reactive bowl. Once the sugar syrup has cooled, add 1 cup of fresh lemon juice (about 6-8 lemons), and 1/3 cup of fresh lime juice (about 3-4 limes) to the syrup. Now pour the lemon-lime mixture over the mint-basil leaves and give it a stir. Let the mixture stand for one hour (if you can wait that long!), then strain it into a jar and keep covered in the fridge for up to a week. To serve, mix up a batch using a 1/3 base to 2/3 water combination if one of our Beehouse Iced Tea Pitchers, Glass Water Bottles or Botanical Glasses. Serve over ice with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint for maximum presentation points!

Derby Iced Tea

Using a vegetable peeler, remove the rinds of 2 lemons, being sure to just get the rind, not the pith beneath. Cut those into thin strips and set aside. Then juice enough lemons to get 2/3 cup of juice and set aside. In a large heat-proof glass bowl tear up 2 cups of loosely packed mint leaves. Add the lemon rind strips, and six English Breakfast tea bags to the bowl and cover with 4 cups of boiling water. Steep for 10-15 minutes, then remove bags. Mix in 1 cup of sugar and the lemon juice and let stand for 10 minutes. Strain the mixture in a non reactive pitcher (like our Beehouse Iced Tea Pot), and add 4 cups of cold water. Refrigerate until chilled and serve with a slice of lemon and a spring of mint. Ahh... I feel cooler already!

Two New Collections from Daily jewelry!

Just in time for the holidays, two new collections of Daily jewelry are now available exclusively at Red Sail!

The first collection, Storm, was inspired by the colors of a dark storm developing over open water. Materials in this collection include smoky quartz, apatite, white freshwater pearls, Biwa pearls, green agate, and sterling silver.

The second collection, Eclipse, uses sophisticated, high-contrast materials; polished onyx, white freshwater pearls, and sterling silver.

It's Alive!

ShopRedSail.com is finally up and running! I must have Halloween on my mind, because I’m feeling a bit like Dr. Frankenstein. Now that all the pieces are in place the site can finally come to life! What satisfaction! I’m really excited about sharing all that Red Sail has to offer, so I’ll get right to it.

Top Five Items of the Week

These are some of my personal favorites… pieces that inspired an audible, “Ooo, I love this!” the first time I saw them. All of these items are incredibly well made, and I’m very happy to be carrying the work of these talented designers. In no particular order:

1. Lavender Guest Towel by Dermond Peterson. These linens are so unique, and the print is just gorgeous. Dermond Peterson linens are block printed by hand, resulting in each towel having wonderful color variations, just like a real lavender plant.

2. Grass Umbrella by Tray 6. Now that rainy season is back in Oregon, I’m thinking I may just have to keep one of these for myself. The vibrant grass design is really eye catching, even on the grayest of raining days.

3. Basket Bowl by Perch. I’m a sucker for a full candy dish, and have been since I was a kid. The modern form of Perch’s ceramic basket elevates the candy dish to the next level… this week I’m filling mine with mini Snickers.

4. Smoke Flask by Joe Cariati. The combination of color and form make this a really sophisticated vessel. I saw these at a show in NY and knew immediately that I had to get them. The smoky gray flask would be an especially striking vessel for orchids and other long stemmed blossoms.

5. Elm Cufflinks by Polli. With autumn in full swing, and leaves dropping with every gust of wind, these stainless steel cufflinks have really captured the striking outline of a bare Elm tree.
